D-Mülheim a.d. Ruhr New Building of the Ruhr-West University
The HPP/ ASTOC joint venture has been awarded the contract to build the new Ruhr West University in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The design for the new university campus in Duisburger Strasse was the winning entry out of 15 in the 2-stage Europe-wide competition.

The brief of the competition was to design a highly attractive urban university campus with its own distinctive identity and a high level of flexibility of use. The resulting campus ensemble sits well in its urban setting and consists of eight separate structures: four faculty buildings, three specialist buildings and a multi-storey car park. The central theme of the design is Unity and Diversity, which is played out over the facades of the individual buildings and becomes the very image of the campus itself. The layout of the public spaces will improve and revitalise the surrounding townscape.

With in total eight buildings and around 60,000 sqm of gross floor area, the university's dimensions equal those of an independent district. However, the HRW functions not only as a new educational facility, but simultaneously as an important component of an urban development design for the university's entire surroundings. For this reason, the various campus buildings are oriented in terms of volume and height towards their surroundings and intentionally open up to the city district and the adjacent uses.

Due to the technical focus of the University's courses, great importance was attached to service planning and supply engineering as well as to sustainability and the environmental impact of the overall development. The entire campus will be completed by mid-2014. The project's implementation is assumed in the function of a main contractor with in total 15 contracted engineering offices. Construction is due to start in spring 2012; completion should be achieved in 2014.
