The master plan for Hamburg’s HafenCity, published in 2000, was an internationally recognised competition success for KCAP Architects & Planners, ASTOC Architects and Planners and Hamburgplan AG. On a total area of approx. 150 hectares of land previously part of the port space and right on the waterfront, the plan provides for the progressive creation of flats for 12,000 people and around 40,000 jobs by the mid-2020s. The excellent potential of HafenCity lies in linking the city centre to the harbour and to the river Elbe with direct sight lines and paths through city areas culminating in a distinctly maritime atmosphere.
Following relocation of the inner city port operations to the container port on the Unterelbe, in the 1990s the unused port land provided space for living and working by the water. For its HafenCity, Hamburg wanted a new European city district for the 21st century with future-oriented designs which would merge the old and the new city and bring the inner city closer to the water with a specific local identity.
ASTOC supported the HafenCity Hamburg master plan until it reached “maturity” and was the guiding light for subsequent construction projects and thematic focuses of the office. There were also follow-on projects, such as the residential tower block and the office and residential building Ost/West at Holzhafen Hamburg.-
